Being Imperfect Out Loud Matters

I find it wildly important to talk about our humanness.

Every day we are bombarded with keyboard warriors who lash out in the comment section of every online platform attacking anyone who is either willing to admit they’re not perfect or is unable to hide their imperfections.

I have said this to several people who have shared with me they have served time incarcerated…” The only difference between you and the rest of the world is that you got caught.”  We have all done something that could have changed the trajectory of our lives.

We are all guilty of throwing the ick we feel for our stuff onto others in an attempt to diminish our shame.

Talking about being imperfect brings to the light that we are all human and all have less than stellar moments. What we don’t need as a society is more shame added to the already difficult experience of life.

We have all had what is now called a Karen Moment. We have all been triggered. We have all had intrusive thoughts we’re not proud of. We have all fantasized about slapping someone. And we have all had actions from our past that haven’t aged well. Which I need to take a moment to point out is a good thing. It means we’ve grown and evolved. We are no longer the person we used to be.

I believe every time we share a moment that was less than stellar, we help each other grow. Our mistakes can be cautionary tales for others, it can help us as a society start a bigger conversation, and it can help others feel less alone in the darkness of shame.

I encourage everyone to bring their messiness to the light. That light could be the light house light another needs to get through the darkness.
